Embroidery file format guide

Machine formats do not all store the same information. Use this guide to see which brand family a file belongs to and what may change when it is converted.

.PES · BROTHER, BABY LOCK

Brother PES

Brother's own format, used across Baby Lock and Bernina Deco machines. It carries thread colours and a design thumbnail, so a converted file arrives with its palette already set.

Open the PES viewer
.DST · TAJIMA

Tajima DST

Written for Tajima commercial machines and read by nearly everything since. It stores stitch movements only — no thread colours at all, which is why a palette is assigned rather than read.

Open the DST viewer
.JEF · JANOME, ELNA

Janome JEF

Janome and Elna machines read JEF. It carries thread colours drawn from Janome's own thread chart, along with the hoop the design was built for.

Open the JEF viewer
.EXP · MELCO, BERNINA

Melco EXP

Melco and Bernina machines read EXP. Like DST it stores movement only; colours travel beside it in a separate INF file, so a converted EXP arrives uncoloured.

Open the EXP viewer
.VP3 · HUSQVARNA VIKING, PFAFF

Husqvarna VP3

The current Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff format. It carries thread colours, and unlike the older HUS it can hold larger designs.

Open the VP3 viewer
.XXX · SINGER XL, COMPUCON

Singer XXX

Singer and Compucon machines read XXX. It stores thread colours alongside the stitches.

Open the XXX viewer
.U01 · BARUDAN

Barudan U01

Barudan commercial machines read U01. It uses needle-selection commands rather than a thread-colour palette. Check needle assignments against the threads loaded on your machine.

Open the U01 viewer
.PEC · BROTHER

Brother PEC

Brother's embedded stitch block — the part of a PES file the machine actually reads. Some older machines and card writers expect it on its own.

Open the PEC viewer
.HUS · HUSQVARNA VIKING

Husqvarna HUS

An older Husqvarna Viking format. HoopFile can read HUS but does not export it. Check your machine manual before choosing VP3 or another output format.

.SEW · JANOME, NEW HOME, ELNA, KENMORE

Janome SEW

The older Janome format, still common in design bundles sold for Elna and Bernina machines. Read-only here.

.PCS · PFAFF

Pfaff PCS

The older Pfaff format from the PC-Designer era. Read-only here.

Common questions

Is HoopFile free to use?

Yes. Every converter and viewer on HoopFile is free, with no account or signup required.

Does HoopFile keep my embroidery files?

Files are uploaded for processing. The converter removes its temporary input and output files after processing. Your browser keeps the selected file, preview and download data while this page is open. Website security and request logs are separate from conversion files.

Which embroidery file formats can HoopFile read?

HoopFile reads PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX, U01, PEC, HUS, SEW and PCS embroidery files.

Which formats can HoopFile create?

HoopFile can create PES, DST, JEF, EXP, VP3, XXX, U01 and PEC files.

Will converting an embroidery file change the design?

HoopFile re-encodes the existing stitch paths rather than re-digitising artwork. Format limits can still affect thread colours, hoop information, trims or very long movements, and each converter explains those limits before download.

Can HoopFile turn a JPG or PNG image into embroidery?

No. Image-to-embroidery requires digitising decisions that are different from translating an existing machine embroidery file.

Your file is uploaded for processing. The converter removes its temporary input and output files after processing; this page keeps the preview and download in browser memory while open.
